“Wouldn’t it be amazing to knit a bag that’s the actual size of a small watermelon or melon?” This idea from Mariko Mikuni sparked the creation of the Watermelon and Melon Pochettes. This kit bundles together everything you need — the yarn and the knitting pattern — so you can cast on right away.
The Watermelon Pochette is modeled after a small watermelon. Its rippling vertical stripes in green and black are worked in garter stitch, and the bright pop of pink along the handles and edges makes for a striking accent.
The Melon Pochette is modeled after a small melon. The melon’s signature net pattern is expressed through a green-and-white stitch design, and the cheerful pairing with a bright yellow will put you in the summer spirit.
Both bags are knitted on straight needles. The yarn used is TUBE, made by Yokota Co., Ltd. It’s a uniquely textured yarn made by knitting nylon thread (like fishing line, with no fuzz) into a tube. Knitting firmly in garter stitch keeps the bag from stretching out of shape, and the thicker yarn means you can breeze through the knitting, which is a real joy.
The pochettes are roomy enough for your phone, a small wallet, and some snacks for the road. Take them out with you and let them add a playful note to your outfit wherever you go.
“Wouldn’t it be amazing to knit a bag that’s the actual size of a small watermelon or melon?” The thought just came to me one day.
…Well, of course it would be amazing. Obviously.
But a bag means yarn first, so I wondered if there’d be something just right — and when I flipped through Yokota’s yarn sample book, there it was: the perfect one. A yarn with a crisp, sturdy feel and colors as fruity as could be!
It seemed to be the kind of yarn people usually use for crochet, but I gave it a try on straight needles in garter stitch, and it worked out rather well. It came out nice and thick, and holds its shape beautifully.
With that settled, I worked with a garter-stitch base and thought through all sorts of ways to bring out the watermelon and melon patterns — and then, ta-da, here we are.
“Yes, it’s a watermelon (yes, it’s a melon) — what of it?” I’d be absolutely thrilled if these made the perfect cool companion for your summer adventures.
