The picture book Ohikosshi illustrated by 100%ORANGE is now available on a Hobonichi Techo cover.
Ohikkoshi was first released in the monthly magazine Ohanashi Pooka in 2007, and published as a picture book the following year. The squirrels all cross the bridge, go down the stairs and just when you think they all made their way across the street, they climb up the wire fence for a short rest...The sight of them all walking together, one after another, is somehow both delightful and refreshing.
The Original-size cover Squirrel Squadron is completely covered in squirrels. The cute and round eyes, fluffy tails, different-colored fur, and the serious yet somehow goofy expressions on their faces are all irresistible. In the group, there is only one that is looking back.
The white butterfly-stopper pen holders are made of synthetic leather. The way the yellow of the interior peeks out adds to the charm.
The cover interior is an energizing yellow, and you can enjoy the scene of the squirrels running across a wide meadow in single file. The tips of the bookmarks have a white charm in the image of a nut. The pocket on the left also includes 100%ORANGE’s signature.
The pocket on the exterior comes in a warm orange color. If you peek inside, you will find that the squirrels have even made it in here!
Stationery to match the techo cover and Weeks is also available, so you can immerse yourself in the world of the picture book Ohikkoshi by using them together.

An orange that can ride on illustrations to fly anywhere it pleases.
How did they come up with the idea of a story all about a big move for a group of squirrels? We asked the duo behind the name 100%ORANGE about the behind the scenes of their 2007 picture book Ohikkoshi.
Oikawa:
Ohikkoshi is a picture book that doesn’t have a protagonist. There’s not even much of a plot, it’s just about squirrels moving from left to right. (Laughs) I don’t believe that all picture books have to have a protagonist and an ordinary story development. I wanted to try making something a little bit different, or rather, I wanted to challenge the concept of a picture book itself! I remember thinking that as I drew this book.
For example, if you put a whole bunch of acorns into a large colander and then tilt it, the acorns would tumble all over each other, right? When you see that amount of things moving every which way, doesn’t that somehow make you feel happy, or maybe a bit excited? This book also started with that feeling.
I used a thicker pen on purpose to draw the squirrels, so that I wouldn’t be able to add in any realistic-looking details. I thought that it would be more fun that way, since it leaves more room for imagination.
Takeuchi:
At the time, we would receive a request to release a picture book each year from the monthly magazine Ohanashi Pooka, which is handed out in places like kindergartens. This book also came to be through this initiative. Unlike creating a picture book specifically for sale at a bookstore, we had some freedom to challenge ourselves with something experimental. Maybe it’s thanks to this that we were able to make something this daring and bold.
While this picture book is already out of print, I was so happy to hear that nearly 20 years after its creation, it was able to collaborate with the 2026 edition of the Hobonochi Techo. I think the ability to be reborn into a new form like this even after such a long time is so exciting, and perfectly showcases the appeal of picture books.

If you’ve used any of these products, we welcome your notes on what you like about them or what led you to buy them so we can share it with customers who are currently considering these products. We’d also love to welcome comments from customers who purchased their techo outside the Hobonichi Store or received their book as a gift.
We’ve compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product. Additionally, the color of the product may be slightly different in actuality than compared to how it appeared on a computer or smartphone screen.
Due to the structure of the cover that opens flat 180 degrees, exterior stitching areas may appear puckered and lining material may be loose.
The pen holder is designed to fit the 12.2 mm (0.48") diameter Jetstream pen offered as a free Hobonichi Store Exclusive Bonus. Pens with certain shapes and materials may be difficult to pull through the holder. The holder can fit pens up to 13.5 mm (0.53") in diameter.
The cover's color and print pattern are created by dyeing or printing onto white fabric. While we take care to ensure consistency during production, slight variations in color or pattern may occur between individual items. This may also happen across a single cover, such as a pocket compared to the rest of the cover. Minor print blurring or uneven coloring may also be present. In addition, on rare occasions, there may be small black or white dots visible on the print. This is an unavoidable aspect of the manufacturing process.
