This cover features artwork from Tomie, the debut work and one of the most iconic creations of horror manga artist Junji Ito. Using original illustrations that bring Junji Ito’s one-of-a-kind world to life, the artwork bridges nearly 40 years since his debut in 1987.
The Tomie Knowing Smile cover for the Original-size techo features luxurious iridescent faux leather, printed with an image of Tomie giving a cold, condescending smile. Her beauty, arrogance, and supernatural ability to return again and again are captured in the shimmering, rainbow-like design of this striking cover.
The cover features a two-tone design that shifts from deep pink on the front to mint green on the back. The illustration, taken from the Tomie: Adopted Daughter chapter, appears to change color depending on the angle, evoking Tomie’s elusive beauty and eerie allure. Her clear eyes and lips are also boldly printed, making a strong visual impression.
The back of the cover is mint green and also features an illustration of Tomie. Her signature long, beautiful black hair and the tear-shaped mole beneath her left eye—one of her defining features—are depicted in stunning detail. The design is complete with a “TOMIE” signature.
At the top of the back cover is an English message—an edited version for the Hobonichi Techo of a line spoken by a male character in the manga, describing Tomie’s irresistible charm. Her clear eyes, sweetly tart voice, and the fragrance that lingers on her skin...no one could possibly compare to Tomie.
The inside of the cover is black. Hidden in the pocket where the Hobonichi Techo book slips in is a disturbing illustration—a stark contrast to the beautiful Tomie on the front. This scene depicts Tomie, having multiplied into a sake mash, attacking a man while exuding a rich, intoxicating aroma. Though this image is concealed once the techo is inserted, you’ll find madness in every meticulously drawn line.
Peeking out from the pocket is Tomie in the form of a human-faced tumor. Even while sitting in a trash can, her arrogant personality remains unchanged, and the man she commands obeys her without question.

About Junji Ito and Tomie
Born in Gifu Prefecture in July 1963.
Won an honorable mention in 1986 for his submission of Tomie to the first Umezu Award in Monthly Halloween (Asahi Sonorama). The horror series became his debut work, and remains his most famous. Tomie, the main character, is a beautiful young woman with long, beautiful black hair and a beauty mark under her left eye. She’s an arrogant, malevolent character who proclaims that she is the most beautiful person in the world. Tomie is like a siren, as her charm lures in men and she then makes a mess of their lives. Eventually the lovestruck men go mad and resort to murder, but Tomie always regenerates and comes back to life to repeat the cycle.

We’ve compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product. Additionally, the color of the product may be slightly different in actuality than compared to how it appeared on a computer or smartphone screen.
- Cover may contain variations in stitching or loose lining
Due to the structure of the cover that opens flat 180 degrees, exterior stitching areas may appear puckered and lining material may be loose.
- Pen holder fits pens up to 13.5 mm wide
The pen holder is designed to fit the 12.2 mm (0.48") diameter Jetstream pen offered as a free Hobonichi Store Exclusive Bonus. Pens with certain shapes and materials may be difficult to pull through the holder. The holder can fit pens up to 13.5 mm (0.53") in diameter.
- Color and print may vary slightly
The cover's color and print pattern are created by dyeing or printing onto white fabric. While we take care to ensure consistency during production, slight variations in color or pattern may occur between individual items. This may also happen across a single cover, such as a pocket compared to the rest of the cover. Minor print blurring or uneven coloring may also be present. In addition, on rare occasions, there may be small black or white dots visible on the print. This is an unavoidable aspect of the manufacturing process.
