Naoki IshikawaDenali in the Midnight Sun #1A5 Cousin Size

This cover features a photograph of Denali, North America’s highest peak, as taken by Naoki Ishikawa.

This photo, capturing the full extent of Mount Denali at 6,190 meters above sea level, was taken from inside a Cessna heading towards base camp for the summit. The view of the mountain composed of deep blue and white looks like a watercolor painting at a glance. This photograph is processed with cyanotype, which is a photographic process that involves a chemical solution and exposure to UV light. The appeal in this design comes from the brush marks that let you see where the solution was applied.

In 2016, Ishikawa climbed Denali all by himself. During a season close to the midnight sun, he diligently kept climbing while bathed in the sunlight, amidst the blue and white landscape. He depicted that scenery more impressively in Denali in the Midnight Sun #1.

The photograph is fully printed on this techo cover. You will be able to have the vast landscape of Denali always by your side.

The butterfly-stopper pen holders, cover interior and bookmarks are all in a calming navy to match the blue of the photograph. The name of the piece and the photographer are printed in silver on the pocket.

Seeing the great scenery with the blue mountain and sky against the white snow and clouds will motivate you whenever it catches your eyes.

    About Naoki Ishikawa

Born in Shibuya, Tokyo, in 1977. Completed the doctoral course in Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts. With an interest in anthropology and folklore, he has traveled to various places, from remote areas to urban cities, continuously exhibiting his works. In 2008, he received the Newcomer’s Award of the Photographic Society of Japan and the Kodansha Publication Culture Award for NEW DIMENSION (AKAAKA Art Publishing) and POLAR (Little More). He has also won the Domon Ken Award for CORONA (Seidosha) in 2011 and the Photographic Society of Japan Award for Best Work for EVEREST (CCC Media House) and Marebito (Shogakukan) in 2020. He received the Kaiko Takeshi Nonfiction Award for The Last Adventurer (Shueisha).

Turning a photo that almost looks like a watercolor painting into a techo cover

When I was thinking of creating a techo cover featuring a photograph, I was reminded of the “Himalaya” cover featuring Naoki Ishikawa’s photograph from the Hobonichi Techo 2015 lineup. I wondered how I can make a cover where you can feel the vast nature like that cover, but with a different touch.

As I went through Ishikawa’s photographs, I was drawn to this photo using cyanotype. With the blue base and a look like a watercolor painting, I thought it would be refreshing to use this photograph as a techo cover.

Cyanotype uses a chemical solution and exposes it to UV light, so you can see the brush marks in the piece. I loved how it looked and decided to print those brush marks onto the cover as well.

I hope you carry around your techo cover as if always keeping a beautiful piece of art with you by your side.

We’ve compiled a list of warnings, potential issues, and tips to keep in mind for this particular product. Additionally, the color of the product may be slightly different in actuality than compared to how it appeared on a computer or smartphone screen.

Cover may contain variations in stitching or loose lining

Due to the structure of the cover that opens flat 180 degrees, exterior stitching areas may appear puckered and lining material may be loose.

Pen holder fits pens up to 13.5 mm wide

The pen holder is designed to fit the 12.2 mm (0.48") diameter Jetstream pen offered as a free Hobonichi Store Exclusive Bonus. Pens with certain shapes and materials may be difficult to pull through the holder. The holder can fit pens up to 13.5 mm (0.53") in diameter.

Color and print may vary slightly

The cover's color and print pattern are created by dyeing or printing onto white fabric. While we take care to ensure consistency during production, slight variations in color or pattern may occur between individual items. This may also happen across a single cover, such as a pocket compared to the rest of the cover. Minor print blurring or uneven coloring may also be present. In addition, on rare occasions, there may be small black or white dots visible on the print. This is an unavoidable aspect of the manufacturing process.
